Tateshina Plateau Barakura English Garden

A healing space decorated with the gentleness of flowers.

Tateshina Plateau Barakura English Garden

Experience an authentic English garden in the Tateshina Highlands, with their environment not dissimilar to that of Great Britain.

This was the first authentic English garden in Japan, opening back in 1990. Under the unified design of the owner, Kay Yamada, everything from the planning, to the stonemasonry, to the gardening is performed by specialists from Britain. Originally the garden consisted of 2,500 flowers transplanted from the UK, and to these were added plants grown right here to make the garden glisten ever brighter. The garden is packed with the flowers for which British-style gardens are famous, from old roses to fritillarias. These flowers flourish in the Tateshina climate, which is said to be close to that of England. In particular the old roses, a symbol of Barakura, entwine the many arches, trellises and pergolas, and with the sweet fragrance they give off convey the brilliance of the wild rose. As one of the “English gardens around the world,” the garden has been picked up by specialist literature in the UK and is frequently showcased on American television programs. The annual “Barakura Flower Show” is also a must-see! Why not enjoy an elegant Afternoon Tea set at the café or restaurant located in the garden? There are events going on practically all the time, so whenever you visit you’re guaranteed to encounter something new.
